Tonight we had our Black History Program. Our 4th grade classes worked with New Stage Theater and acted out Uncle Jed's Barber Shop and Talk about a Family. The 4th graders did a FANTASTIC job! Mrs. Williams, our music teacher, worked with our school showchoir and did an AWESOME dance interpretation to "Wade in the Water".

Our Valentine Party

Toni, Tierra, Quaniesha, Shaniah, and Ashaunti "teaching" Ms. Chassidy a new dance.

Due to all the snow that we had on Friday, February 12, 2010, we had to reschedule our class Valentine's party. We had our class party on Friday, February 26, 2010. We all brought food for our party. There was so much food that Ms. Strum thought that we would get sick. Ms. Strum thought that something was wrong with us due to how quiet we were. We must have been HUNGRY! :-) After we were done eating, Ms. Strum and Ms. Chassidy took us out side to play and dance. We had the best time!

Reading is Fundamental

Ms. Strum and Ms. Chassidy's 2nd grade Class with their new RIF books!

Today we had our RIF Distribution at school. RIF stands for Reading is Fundamental. This is a program where every student in the school gets to choose a book of their very own. Mrs. Land and the Junior League Ladies work very hard to make it a great day! We go into Mrs. Land's room and she has books all over the table for us to pick. It is such a hard decision. We are so thankful for all that Mrs. Land and the Junior League does for us to help us become better readers.

Cooking with Bruno the Baker

Jemarcus and Myeesha reading Bruno the Baker.

Bruno the Baker was the story of the week. The story was about Bruno and Felix. It was Bruno's birthday and Felix came over to help him make a cake for his birthday. We made a cake during our center time today with Ms. Strum. Ms. Strum brought the ingredients and supplies for us to make a cake. We talked about the steps that we have to follow IN ORDER. Ms. Strum talked with us about what would happen to the cake if we did not put the steps in order. Each group got to make their very own cake!

More Centers

Johnathan and Shaniah working hard using the strategies they learned.

As we have told you in previous blog entries, we love working in centers! The center pictured above is a new center that Ms. Strum made for us. Ms. Strum made us some sample test questions. She glued them down in file folders and laminated them. Ms. Strum gave us overhead markers so that we could work through the sample test questions.

Bryson working hard on completing his sample test items.

We have been working on simple and compound sentences this week. We have been learning how to take simple sentences to form a compound sentence. Ms. Strum taught us when we combine the sentences, it is followed with a comma and a conjunction. Ms. Strum gave us 12 sets that include 2 simple sentences and a conjunction. We had to take the simple sentences and the conjunction to make a compound sentence.

Shamiah reading One Hundred Days Older.

This week we read stories about how other countries celebrate their birthdays. The two stories that we read were Birthday Joy and The Best Older Sister. The story Birthday Joy taught us how children in Mexico, Germany, and Israel celebrate their birthday. The Best Older Sister was a story about a girl whose parents recently had a baby boy. She felt left out due to her baby brother receiving all the attention. Her grandmother taught her that everyone in a family has a special place. Sunhi's grandmother made her a special gown for her to host her brother's birthday.

Derrick and Karlon reading One Hundred Days Old.

This week in centers we read the story One Hundred Days Old. This story teaches us the traditions on how the celebrate birthdays. As we read this story in centers, we learned that they celebrate the baby's 100th day birthday. As you can tell, we have learned how other countries celebrate their birthday.

Graphs!

We have been learning about graphs this week in Math! Ms. Strum taught us that there are three different types of graphs that we will learn. Ms. Strum told us that we would learn about the bar graph, line graph, and pictograph. Ms. Strum taught us that in order to make a graph with have to gather data on the subject we are graphing. We learned that data is the information gathered. Today we gathered informaion on our classmates. We learned what month our classmates were born. We took the information and made a tally chart. Ms. Strum helped us take the information on the tally chart and make it into a bar graph. Ms. Strum had us make the bar graph as a class. We had to answer questions about the information on the graph.
