AR-Accelerated Reading

Ms. Strum's class with their 1st AR/Library Book

WOW! What a great week we have had! Today we went to the Library. Ms. Sasser is the BEST Librarian. She lets us check out library books now that we are in the 2nd grade. We have become so much more responsible this year. Every Tuesday when we go to Ms. Sasser, we check out a library book. We take AR tests on the books with Ms. Sasser or Ms. Strum. The AR tests will deal with questions on what our book was about. We must make 70% or higher on each quiz or we retake the quiz. When we take quizzes on our library books, we are able to earn AR points. Once we earn 5 points, Ms. Sasser lets us visit the PRIZE CLOSET! The more we READ, the STRONGER readers we become, and the more we LEARN!!!

Our First Full Week of School!

WOW! What a great week we have had! We have been learning a great deal this week! This week in Phonics we have been learning and reviewing the short A, I, and U. We have reviewed that short A says A in apple, short I says I in Indian, and short U says U in umbrella. Ms. Strum gave us words that we had to sort by the sound they made. Throughout the week in Reading, we have been Reading Franny and Ginny and Daddy, Could I Have an Elephant? Before reading Franny and Ginny, Ms. Strum taught us about Predictions. Before reading the story, we made predictions about the story. After listening to the story, we went back over our predictions and had to prove within the story if our predictions about what happened in the story came true or not! We also read the story Daddy, Could I Have an Elephant? In this story, we learned about a little boy who wanted a pet more than anything. At the end of the week, Ms. Strum taught us how to retell the story in writing that we had read.

We learned about the four kinds of sentences this week in English. Ms. Strum taught us that there are four kinds of sentences. The first kind of sentence is a Declarative sentence. A declarative sentence is the same as a telling sentence. This sentence ends in a period. The second kind of sentence is an Interrogative sentence. This sentence is the same as an asking sentence. It ends in a question mark. The third kind of sentence is an Imperative sentence. This sentence is also known as a command sentence. This sentence is used when you are giving an order. It ends in a period. The fourth kind of sentence is an Exclamatory sentence. It ends in an exclamation mark. An exclamation mark is used to show excitement or fear. Ms. Strum gave us all four kinds of sentences. We had to cut out the sentences and glue them under the correct heading according to the sentence being Declarative, Interrogative, Imperative, or Exclamatory.

Throughout the week in Math, Ms. Strum reviewed basic addition and subtraction facts with us. We made circle maps on addition and subtraction vocabulary. Ms. Strum taught us that when we see the words in all, altogether, and sum we add. We know that we subtract when we see the words how many are left, take away, and difference. Ms. Strum also taught us about fact families. Ms. Strum will do better next week taking pictures of our Math lessons.

This week we started going to Special Subjects. On Tuesday and Thursday, we went to Music with Mrs. Williams. We had a good time with her. We love to sing and dance with Mrs. Williams. On these same days, we go to Library as well. This week Ms. Sasser taught us how to take an AR test. We get to check out books and take AR tests on the books that we check out. We are also able to take AR tests on books that Ms. Sasser and Ms. Strum read to us. We are able to earn points on the books that we read. Ms. Sasser gives us prizes out of her "Prize Closet" when we earn a certain number of AR points! This helps us become "better" readers. On Friday, Mr. D took us outside for P.E. We always have a great time with Mr. D. He is alot of fun. He told Ms. Strum that we did good for him. Ms. Strum always tells us that "We are the Best Class in the Whole School!" On Friday, we showed Mr. D that we were! :-) He came back telling Ms. Strum that we were good for him! :-)

The FIRST Week of School

WOW! What a great week we have had! There are 22 students in our class. We are going to have a great year learning and getting to know each other! We have done SO much over the past three days! We have been reviewing our addition facts, subtraction facts, and basic sight words. We have also done some work to show Ms. Strum how much we know! Each student made a bubble map telling Ms. Strum and classmates about themselves. Each student also made a self-portrait. The students did a great job on these assignments!
