Walking and Reading to Good Health!

Today we had another RIF(Reading is Fundamental). RIF is a book give away! Each and every student in our school receives a book of their choice. The Junior League and Mrs. Land work so hard to make this an enjoyable day and event.

Our theme for the RIF give away was Walking and Reading to Good Health! We walked the track. After walking the track, we went and picked out our RIF give away book! Thank you so much Junior League for all your SUPPORT in helping us grow academically!

We were so excited about our new books that we were able to get today! We could not even wait to get to our room to show our classmates our new books. The students gathered around in the grass showing their new book while the rest of the class tried to decide what book to get! Thank you Junior League! We appreciate all that you do!

Watch DOGS Family Picnic

Today we had our Spring Watch DOGS Family Picnic! The Watch DOGS dads prepared hamburgers and hot dogs for the students and their families. Mrs. Williams' husband is the soccer coach at Hinds Community College. He brought 30 soccer balls and 2 of the soccer players with Hinds. They played soccer games with the students! A great time was had by all! We had a Space Jump that we were able to jump in! It was so much fun! We had a great time!

As you can tell, we had a GREAT time at the picnic! The food was delicious, and visiting with everyone was so much fun! Thank you so much to the Watch DOGS and Mr. Mullen for a great day!

Fractions

Today Ms. Strum introduced a new math skill to us. Ms. Strum told us that we would be learning about FRACTIONS to get ready for 3rd grade! We learned that a fraction names the part of a whole. Ms. Strum taught us that the top number(numerator) is the number of sections shaded or left over. Ms. Strum taught us that the bottom number(denominator) is the number of sections that the whole is divided into.

Ms. Strum told us that we were going to do an activity that would help us understand fractions. Ms. Strum gave each one of us a pack of fun size candy. We poured out our candy on a napkin. Ms. Strum told us to count the pieces of candy. The total pieces of candy is the bottom number of the fraction(denominator). We wrote this number on the sticky note. Ms. Strum told us to count how many purple pieces of candy were on our napkin. This number would be our top number(numerator). We would show our sticky note with our fraction to the class and explain how we came up with the fraction.

We continued doing this fraction activity with each color of the candy. This was a fun way for us to learn about fractions! We are hard at work in our 2nd grade classroom getting ready for 3rd grade!

Going to Town

Over the past week, we have been reading the story, Going to Town. Going to Town is a book by Laura Ingalls Wilder. These events took place over a hundred years ago. The characters in the story are Ma, Pa, Mary, Laura, and Carrie. The family lived in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Pa was a very hard worker and told the family that once he got the crops planted, they would go into town. Mary, Laura, and Carrie had NEVER been to town. They all got ready the night before by curling their hair. Upon entering town, Laura was amazed at what she saw. She saw so many houses, and they were all so close together!

This story took place during Colonial times! Ms. Strum talked with us about how things are different from then and everyday life now! We discussed how things are different. Ms. Strum told us that we were going to make a lap book on the story, Going to Town. There were different aspects of the book that we included in the lap book. We talked about the characters and setting. The class discussed what took place in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. We made a t-chart on the differences between the past and the present. Ms. Strum had us illustrate our lap book. This was a great way to show what we learned reading the story.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

Today we were very fortunate to see the play If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff. This play was put on by New Stage Theatre. They did a FANTASTIC job! The Kindergarten through Fifth grade students were able to attend. This was made possible by the PTA at our school! We are so thankful for our PTA who does so much for us! Take a good look and see what GREAT time we had!

As you can tell, it was a FANTASTIC play! All the students loved it and were laughing the whole time through! It was a great sound to hear! Thanks again to our wonderful PTA for sponsoring If You Give a Mouse a Cookie!

We ROCKED our District Tests!

We ROCKED our District Tests! We have been working so hard on getting ready for our District Nine Weeks Tests! About two weeks ago our scores came back in and we have done the BEST that we have EVER DONE! Our teachers have been telling us that we can do it! We just have to take our time, read each story carefully, read each question carefully, show our work, and THINK!!! We Mrs. Strum was so proud of each and everyone of us! Ms. Strum gave us a certificate for each test that we passed!!! We are so proud!! We will keep on doing our best and taking our time!

Motivation and Rewards

Dr. Bowen, Mrs. Grigsby, the school PTA, and our teachers work so hard to keep us motivated to do our best, take our time, complete our homework each and every night, and do what our teachers ask us to do! Every Monday our teachers submit our names if we did all of the things listed above. The office then draws names out of a jar. Children all throughout the school won prizes. Shaniah in our room won a prize! We were so proud! We will ALL try hard this week so that our name can be pulled out of the jar! Keep up the good work!
