$ Money, Money, Money! $

Wow! What a week of learning we have had! This week Ms. Strum taught us about money! Ms. Strum taught us that a penny is worth 1 cent, a nickel is worth 5 cents, a dime is worth 10 cents, a quarter is worth 25 cents, and a half-dollar is worth 50 cents. Ms. Strum taught us something that will help us count money. Ms. Strum taught us that when we count money that we can use eyelashes to count. We learned that each eyelash represents 5 cents! Ms. Strum asked us if a penny got an eyelash. We told her that it did NOT get an eyelash because it was only worth 1 cent! Ms. Strum then taught us that a nickel gets 1 eyelash, a dime gets 2 eyelashes, a quarter gets 5 eyelashes, and a half-dollar gets 10 eyelashes!

Ms. Strum gave us several different sets of coins. We had to trace around the coins and put the eyelashes that matched each coin. Ms. Strum had us show our work and total the amount of money! We loved learning how to use the eyelashes. This helped us learn how to count money. Ms. Strum made sure that we knew how to count money using the eyelash method. Ms. Donlin, our student teacher, gave us a pig with an amount of money on it. We had to use the money and show the coin combination that equaled the amount of money written on the pig. Ms. Strum had us show our work using the eyelashes.

Briana working on finding the coin combination that equals the amount written on the pig.

Alex, James, and Quaniesha hard at work counting money.

Xzyia using the eyelash method to learn how to count money.

Tierra and Johnathan using the coins they have been given to count the amount of money.

Kenosha working hard to complete her work!

As you can tell, we are a SMART group od students in Ms. Strum's class. We have a great time learning! Please continue to check out our blog to see how much we learn throughout this school year!

Noun Hunt!

This week Ms. Strum has taught us all about NOUNS! Ms. Strum told us that today we will be going on a NOUN HUNT around the school. Ms. Strum gave us a sheet of paper and told us to grab a book to write on. Ms. Strum and Ms. Donlin walked us around the school to make lists of Common and Proper Nouns. For example, if I wrote down the Common Noun librarian, then I would write down the Proper Noun Ms. Sasser.

NOUNS!

This week Ms. Strum taught us all about NOUNS! We learned about two different types of nouns. The first type of noun that we learned about was a Common Noun. A common noun names a person, place, thing, or animal. The second type of noun that we learned about was a Proper Noun. A proper noun names a SPECIFIC person, place, thing, or animal. Ms. Strum also taught us that Proper Nouns begin with a capital letter. We made a T-chart with the common nouns on one side and on the other side Ms. Strum wrote the Proper Noun that went with the Common Noun. Ms. Strum then had us work in groups. She gave each group a sheet of construction paper. We folded the sheet of paper in half. On one side of the paper, we wrote the Common Nouns. As a group, we wrote Proper Nouns on the other side that matched each common noun. Look at the pictures below to see how hard we are working!

We Love to Write!

This school year Ms. Strum has been teaching us how to write a paragraph. As a class, we wrote a paragraph about the movie High School Musical from beginning to end. Ms. Strum taught us that the first step in writing a paragraph is Brainstorming. Ms. Strum taught us that a FLOW MAP is a great way to ORGANIZE our thoughts from beginning, middle, and end.

After Ms. Strum showed us how to make a flow map and organize our thoughts, Ms. Strum divided us into groups. We were given four different movie titles. As a group, we chose a movie to make a flow map on from beginning, middle, and end. Ms. Strum told us that flow maps are used to put main events in order from beginning to end.

Briana, Ladarius C., and Trinity working on their flow map on Finding Nemo.

Toni, Kesheona, and Derrick working on their flow map about Finding Nemo.

Karlon, Jemarcus, and Ladarious M. are working hard on their flow map on
The Incredibles.

Jairus and Eddie working on their flow map about Finding Nemo.

Shamiah, Alex, and Quaniesha working on their flow map on Finding Nemo.

As the week continued, Ms. Strum showed us how to take the flow map and write a paragraph on the movie. Since the beginning of school, Ms. Strum has taught us that the 5 steps to the Writing Process are Brainstorming, Rough Draft, Revising, Editing, and Publishing. We are looking forward to all the Writing that we will do this year!

Place Value

This week we have been learning ALOT about PLACE VALUE! Ms. Strum has used base ten block to introduce this lesson. Ms. Strum also taped four squares on the floor. Each of the squares represented each place value. Each digit has a place. The squares from right to left represent the ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands place. It is very important that we learn place value so that we can understand regrouping.

Tierra, Johnathan, and JeMarcus represent a "PLACE VALUE"!
Ms. Strum also taught us how to add without regrouping using the base ten blocks. We know how to do this without base ten blocks. Ms. Strum made sure that we could show her how to add without regrouping using base ten blocks. This will help us SO much when Ms. Strum teaches us how to add WITH regrouping!

Shamiah, Alex, and Quaniesha using base 10 blocks to add without regrouping!

Bryson, Jairus, and Eddie using base 10 blocks to add without regrouping!

Karlon and Jemarcus using base 10 blocks to add without regrouping!

We have learned so much this week about place value using base ten blocks. Ms. Strum makes sure that we learn everyday. We MUST focus and always do our best! This is going to be the BEST year ever!
